What more could you ask for? Not much if you ask anyone who attended the 4th An- nual Del Mar Surf & Turf Competition held the weekend of August 17 at the world famous Del Mar Racetrack in Cali- fornia. Shawn Walchef, owner and opera- tor of Cali Comfort Restaurant, and his crew put on an amazing event that thrilled teams and judges. Also over 2,000 of the total 11,261 track attendees came out to support the West Coast BBQ Move- ment at this year's 4th Annual Turf & Surf BBQ Championship by sampling and tast- ing BBQ and brews. The judging for this event took place on a Sunday, but by 12 noon on Saturday nearly all of the 35 teams were neatly parked in their spots and settling down to enjoy cool ocean breezes and California sunshine. The next day ticket holders to the event All photos courtesy of WVFRNT Marketing were treated to cooking demonstrations by former KCBS board member and mas- ter chef Gene Goycohea, Sterling Ball of Big Poppa Smokers, Sam the Cooking Guy, Official Big Green Egg Ambassador David Rose, and KCBS Ambassador and show- man Mike Peters. “We are very lucky to be able to host a KCBS event in such an amazing venue as the Del Mar Racetrack,” said Shawn Walchef. “Nothing is more exciting than to watch and help the sport of BBQ grow on the West Coast.” True to his word many of the teams were from California although some Arizona teams came out to enjoy the cooler beach experience. Many of the local restaurants did sam- pling putting their unique spin on BBQ and other culinary delights.
