Over the past few years, we have tried a truck load of different wood pellets in- side our RecTeq pellet grills. The sad truth is that only a few of these brands were truly authentic BBQ and grilling products that worked well. Royal Oak Charcoal has produced a true winner in their new Charcoal Hardwood Pellets.
Every test we performed with these pellets exceeded our expectations as they worked exactly how they were adver- tised to work. Below is a list of claims made by the Royal Oak and the results of our tests.
Water Resistant: This claim was super easy to verify. We simply took a cup and filled it half way with pellets and fin- ished filling it with water. 30 minutes later there was no swelling or damage to the pellets from the water. This is the only pellet we have ever tried that did not swell or turn to dust after being exposed to water.
Burns Hotter: Our RecTeq grills will not allow tempera- tures over 550 degrees so we had to put this theory to the test using a long cook with equal amounts of pellets. If this claim is true then we should get more time from the char- coal pellets vs. the standard wood pellets. The results showed us exactly that result. We burnt two pounds of the different pellets and timed each one of them. The Royal Oak Charcoal Pellets gave us 14 minutes of extra burn time, which proved this claim was indeed true.
Authentic BBQ Flavor: To test this claim we slowed our cookers way down to make sure the pellets had an oppor- tunity to impart their flavor inside our test product. We de- cided to cook up a poor man brisket (Beef Chuck Roast and use the same recipe as a brisket). We started our RecTeq at 200 degrees for two hours before wrapping our roast up
and finishing it at 275 degrees. The flavor left behind on our roast was indeed identical to what we get from cooking this recipe with a charcoal grill.
The end result proved to us that these are indeed 100% Charcoal Hardwood Pellets and performed much like char- coal. We are really impressed with this product and plan to make these a major part of our cooking arsenal when using our pellet cookers.
