 Well, it’s official. I’m ‘that’ old. How old is ‘that’? Old enough that I start stories with ‘I re- member when....’. So with that in mind, let’s get started.
I remember when YouTube first started. Technically, it was just after YouTube first started. But that’s not important. Where was I? Oh yes. I was living in South Korea, working as an English teacher and a coworker asked me if I’d heard about YouTube. I had not. When I asked her what it was, she said it was a website where people could film videos of themselves and upload them. It was a polarizing moment and I distinctly remember what I said.
“Wow. Why would anyone want to do that?”
Yep. That was the same year that I also turned down an opportu- nity to get into Bitcoin right at the start for $50. That would be worth $4 million dollars now. Just let that sink in for a moment.
Where was I? YouTube. Yes, YouTube. Immunocompromised, Dean Schuman, or ‘Schuey’ to his mates was locked down well be- fore the rest of us. Facing an unknown amount of time confined to home and therefore unable to work, Dean took stock of what he had at hand. As a professional photography and long time Weber lover, he quickly realised he had three things at his disposal. A Weber, a bunch of camera gear, and a tonne of time. And so ‘Schueys BBQ’ was born.
And people loved it. It’s easy to see why.
Schuey’s presentation style is unique - he’s funny and relatable
with a healthy dose of good Aussie larrikin thrown in for good measure. His videos keep the information simple and with over three decades experience cooking on Weber Kettles, correct. And while all of his dishes look amazing, thanks in no small part to his experience as a professional photographer, the dishes are simple and anyone would be able to recreate them. There’s a very simple reason for this - Schuey’s goal is to inspire people to drag out their BBQs and give charcoal a go. And it’s not just the thousands of subscribers who love his work.
YouTube have singled him out and selected him as a ‘Creator on the Rise’. There are a multitude of perks that this provides, but es- sentially it means YouTube has selected Schueys BBQ to promote on the platform as recommended content. There are currently more than 2 billion active users on YouTube. So let that sink in for a minute too!
The growth of Schueys BBQ has been phenomenal and Dean is now a full time BBQ content creator. He’s recently brought on a camera person and an editing person, creates content commer- cially for 2 additional Youtube channels, and has struck partner- ships with companies including Z Grills, Masterfoods, Signature Oysters and more.
New videos are published on Schueys BBQ on YouTube twice a week. So head on over to YouTube and check him out. As my rela- tives in Arkansas say: “It’s a guuuuud time”.
