B.T. Leigh's brand of sauces and rubs got their start like most other successful BBQ products, they all started with a dream. It was in a tiny Ohio kitchen where B.T. Leigh's Sauces were born. What began as a desire to feed friends and family morphed into a dream to share these small batches of distinct sauces with everyone else. After falling in love with a Kentucky girl, B.T. Leigh brought his sauces to the Bluegrass State, where he was inspired to expand his barbecue family to include spice rubs.
The Rubs
We got our first exposure to these products during our 2019 Rubs of Honor event that took place in November. Their "Something For Rub- bin'" rub finished 10th in our Chicken category. They also had several very respectable finishes as well. The "Some- thing To Cry About" rub was probably the most talked- about entry as it offended several
differ-
ent judge's taste buds with extreme
heat. Brain Leigh told us in a letter that "I probably should not have submitted my "Somethin' To Cry About" for any of those blind cate- gories. That might have been a bit cruel to those not expecting that heat creep." Love the heat? Then you will surely want to have this one on order.
The Sauces
We kicked off the New Year with a
sample package of two different sauces sent to us from Brian. We found our- selves craving more after our first tast- ing. The "Somethin' Somethin' Sauce" is a heat friendly and sophisticated mix- ture of coffee, cinnamon, sumac com- bined with a touch of sweet and tangy. Our samples of chicken were great, but our pork steaks came to life with a bit of this recipe slathered on them. This sauce also just finished winning the Mild BBQ category of the 2019 International Fla- vor Awards. We will experiment more with this sauce as we practice up for a few rib contests in our future.
Our favorite B.T. Leigh's product that we have tested was mustard-based sauces called "The Clevelander." The chicken thighs and wings we dunked in this recipe tickled our taste buds as they have never been tickled before. Hints of maple and rosemary and other spices create a sweet start and very smooth finish. All we can say is "Winner, winner chicken dinner! Our tests of pork with "The Clevelander" didn't disappoint either. The pulled pork sandwiches we produced were using the sauce could easily excite anyone who is a fan of mustard. This sauce was recently awarded two different first-place awards in BBQ Mustard categories at the 2020 Scovie Awards and 2019 International Flavor
Awards.
To say these products passed our tests would be a significant under- statement. Every B.T. Leigh's prod- uct we tried proved to be different and very good. Even the super spicy rub had a flavor punch to accom- pany the heat contained inside. We will indeed be partaking of these ex- cellent products for years to come.
