As we prepare to embark on our 30th Anniversary Tour, we want to remember those mo- mentous events, characters, and the BBQ family members that propelled us to this point. Without their continued sup- port there is no way this tour would be happening.
One of the most significant events, or series of events, the Barbecue News helped orches- trate was called the National
BBQ Festival. This barbe- cue festival hosted five dif- ferent events in one weekend that showcased every aspect the barbecue world has to offer. The biggest competition of the yearly event was called "The Best of the Best." The teams invited to this annual event con- sisted of the top 10 teams from every sanctioning or- ganization across the en- tire world. Without question, this single event
generated an atmosphere of BBQ royalty like very few other con- tests.
Back in 2005, I was honored to receive one of the coveted "Big Ding A Ling" bells that we awarded to all first-place winners. The engraving reads, " Presented to Kell Phelps and National Barbe- cue News for outstanding contributuion. 2005 National BBQ Fes- tival". This bell has hung outside our office entrance since receiving it. Its new home will be on the back porch of our SDG trailer as part of the 2020 tour. Make sure and give her a ring when you see us soon!
