                                                        LESSON 2
Attributes of an Appropriate Agroforestry System

               Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to:
                   a) Enumerate the attributes of agroforestry system,
                   b) Demonstrate the attributes of agroforestry system,
                   c) explain the desirable characteristics for agroforestry.

The attributes of Agroforestry System work on three premises which,
theoretically, all agroforestry system possesses like as follows:

                   A. BIOLOGICAL PREMISE

Agroforestry is based on the advantages of the components of soil and
                       environment.

                       1. Soil Conservation and
                          Amelioration

                              Minimizes or controls soil
                          erosion, accumulation of litter
                          that contributes to soil fertility,
                          windbreaks and protects soil
                          from excessive evaporation and
                          the general beneficial effects of
                          trees in nutrient cycling.
                                                                    Plate 2: Soil Conservation and
                                                                    Amelioration

                       2. Water Conservation

Trees increases soil porosity, increase water retaining capacity
                              through organs debris and litter.

                       3. Micro-Climate Amelioration

Trees reduce temperature, air turbulence, solar radiation and
                              damper environmental situations.

                       4. Other Benefits

Aesthetic value, food and shelter for wildlife.
