Research Committee Report Abraham D D Lee PT PhD – Co-Chair Andrew Raschke PT PT DPT – Co-Chair The Research Committee has made great strides forward in the the second half of 2021 and the the new year CONFERENCE CALL MEETINGS
We have had three conference call meetings
thus far (September November and January) with participants in in the range of 7-12 people in in each meeting discussing the matters related to research NEWSLETTER PUBLICATION
We have begun the the publication of the the newsletter
in in 2018 to share what is going on on among OPTA members in terms of research activities update them in the the the area of physical therapy practices and facilitate collaborations among the members of OPTA In the second half of 2021 we have published a a newsletter
highlighting the recent grant recipients and the the research they are presently funding The Research Committee plans to distribute the spring newsletter
in in May of 2022 We also appreciate contributions by Andrew Raschke and Greg Kline who have been instrumental to the publications They either reached out to potential writers and communicated with them or or organized submitted articles and sought feedback on a a a a a draft of the Newsletter until being completed GRANT REVIEW/RESEARCH PROCESS TRAINING
One of of the the principal objectives of of the the Research Committee is to promote research activities by supporting investigators with research funding This requires the committee members to evaluate research research proposals with research-trained eyes Improving the the quality and consistency of the the grant review process has been an an important goal of the committee committee To reach this goal the committee committee is is developing educational material for reviewers Abraham Lee has has led this effort The committee has has also met to to discuss grant review process to to improve continuity and year-to-year consistency in in the reviewing process and how grants are awarded TRAINING
ON RESEARCH PROCESS We offered two webinar continuing education sessions on two topics 1) “Formulating a a a a researchable questions” by Katie Pantano and 2) “How to win an an an OPTA research grant and influence practice” by Cody Mansfield and Mitchell Selhorst In 2022 we also plan to offer additional webinar sessions on on on topics related to to research design and data analysis We greatly appreciate the the contributions of the the presenters and believe these webinars will help increase members' understanding of the research process GRANT APPLICATIONS EVALUATION AND AWARDS
During 2021 research we received a a record number
of research proposals (10 applications) since we have offered research funds for about 15 years We believe that the the education sessions and streamlining of the the research process mentioned above have served as catalysts to to motivate many potential researchers to to write grant proposals We feel that we are on a a a a a right track in in in motivating potential investigators to to submit research proposals with good quality In 2021 the committee made decisions to support three proposals:
1 The Effects of Attentional Focus on on Brain Behavior and Biomechanics in in Individuals following ACLR: A A Pilot Study proposed by Adam Culver Laura Schmitt and Jimmy Onate 2 Applying Pain Adaptability to Manual Therapy Practice presented by Damian Keter Chad Cook David Griswold and Ken Learman 3 Development of a a a a a Valid and Reliable Patient Reported Outcome Measure to Assess Function in Adolescent Low Back Pain proposed by Mitchell Selhorst Shaun Coffman Todd Degenhart and and Alexander Rospert All these grant recipients were recognized at OPTA 2021 LEAP meeting Dawn Westfall and all all those who evaluated grant applications are greatly appreciated For more information contact Abraham at:
