next generation, we must find a way to show how good life is in our organization and how important it is for Gen Y to step up to the plate and become leaders. Many leaders wonder why no one wants to take their place, all while they complain about the job. It is up to our generation to teach the next generation the values of leadership and guide them by being positive role models. A good leader must have integrity and display honesty in all aspects of their lives when dealing with others. Without this, they will not have the trust of their followers and cannot direct them. By walking the talk, a good leader earns the right to be responsible for and have authority
over others.
I believe the next generation likes attention, flexibility and growth.
If we can find a way to foster these needs, our organizations will continue to thrive. We need to focus on the big picture. Millennials want to know why they are required to do certain tasks and the purpose behind each task. Remember, you had to learn; someone had to explain it all to you. Increase responsibility; millennials want to matter. They want to take on big challenges. Provide them with “real” responsibilities with real consequences if the task does not get accomplished. Give them mentors. Partner them with positive employees who will provide both constructive criticism and praise, if deserved. Invest in this generation; give them opportunities for personal and professional development. Offer them opportunities to test their new skills by giving them new challenges. Millennials enjoy improving their skills and having an opportunity to grow quickly. This generation expects results quicker than previous generations, so you may have to adjust promotion practices as you employ more millennials in your organization. Be flexible; millenni- als want more time for family and friends, volunteering and personal hobbies. Integrate these requests into your organization; think of volunteering as a marketing initiative. This will help you and your organization be more progressive and instill harmony amongst
the troops.
In conclusion, you, the leader of your organization, must set the
example and encourage the organization to embrace the next genera- tion. Good leaders understand and set the moral tone of a group
or organization. Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible. (Ignorance can make you work hard without progress.) u
