Constituents
It contains 1.8-4% alkaloids, especially emetine and cephaline. their 1',2'-

dehydro-derivatives psychotrine, O-methyl psychotrine,, and other minor alkaloids.
The ratio emetine: cephaline is 2:1 to 3:1 for the Rio drug and 1:1 to 3:,2 for the
Cartagenna drug. Contrary to older reports, saponins are absent, and the supposed
"ipecacuanhin", "ipecacanhic acid", and "saponin of ipeca" are crude mixtures of
ipecoside, a tetrahydro-isoquinoline monoterpenoid glycoside, and sucrose. Other
such N-containing glycosides are present and also the iridoids sweroside and 7-
dehydro-loganin.
