Powdered colocynth is pale buff colored, light with slight or no odor and
intensely bitter persistent taste. It is characterized microscopically by the following
fragments:
1. Numerous fragments of parenchyma with very few small spiral and
annular vessels.
2. Very few fragments of polygonal sclerenchymatous cells of epicarp.
3. Occasional fragments of isodiametric sclerenchymatous cells, and
parenchymatous cells from the seed containing aleurone grains and oil globules.
4. Starch and calcium oxalate are absent.
