If you must use force, when you’re done ask the person if they are okay. This lets them know the fight is
over and you were just doing your job. A simple question or phrase like “Are you okay man?” will work
just fine.
Avoid using chemical spray in a confined unventilated area. Areas with poor ventilation will contaminate
you as well.
When responding to loose livestock calls and you locate a damaged area of fence, use a piece of crime
scene tape to mark the damaged area so the owner knows where to repair the fence.
In Texas, a found driver’s license can be placed in a mail drop off and the USPS will deliver it to owner.
As an officer, let people know this when they bring you found driver’s licenses. Otherwise, if we accept
them and log them in, they’ll just sit in our property forever.
Also, in Texas: When a motorist calls the roadside assistance number of the back of a Texas driver’s
license, the call goes to a DPS dispatch center in Austin and is then transferred to a dispatch center near
the motorist. From there, a local law enforcement officer is dispatched to assist the motorist.
Remember this when you get dispatched to a stranded motorist and when you arrive, they tell you they
don’t need police and that they have already called roadside assistance. They don’t know we are the
roadside assistance.
In Argyle, when you hear a broadcast of a reckless driver, consider how long it takes from where you are
at that moment to the freeway (most are broadcasts of reckless drivers are from the freeway). Also,
understand that it takes approximately 3 minutes for a driver to go from the 76mm to 79mm. What that
means is that unless you are on the freeway or very close to the freeway, you don’t have a chance of
catching them, so don’t put people’s lives in danger speeding up there only to discover the vehicle is
already in another city. With that said, if you hear a broadcast about one being northbound at the
72mm or southbound at the “split”, run the plate, and figure out what address the vehicle is registered
to. This may help you figure out whether or not they will continue to travel in that direction or if they
will exit. For example, if a vehicle is traveling NB at the 72, but is registered to an address in Flower
Mound, they will likely exit at 1171 and head to Flower Mound. However, if the vehicle is registered to
an address in Denton or Sanger, they are likely going to be driving right through Argyle on the way to
Denton or Sanger.
