Police Equipment
On your person:
Folding knife-carry it where you can get to it, many officers carry it on the opposite side of their firearm.
This is a good idea because if you injure your gun hand, you still have access to another lethal option
with your other hand.
Compact flashlight-Roughly half of the day is dark, and some buildings can be dark even during the day.
So, having a flashlight on you is imperative.
Weapon light-Weapon lights increase your chances of clearly identifying your threat in darkness. Having
the light on your firearm also allows you to grip your firearm with both hands which improves your
accuracy.
Police stickers-Always carry stickers with you. You’ll run into small kids everywhere and a sticker will
mean the world to them.
Backup gun-think of it as insurance, carry it where you can easily get to it with your left hand. I prefer to
have my back up gun on my ankle because it makes it much harder to reach in some positions. They
make holsters that fit on the side of your vest, and I recommend those. Plus, if someone ever grabs your
legs for some reason, it’s harder to protect a gun carried on your ankle. In this job, you just never know
what is going to happen.
Handcuffs-keep your equipment in good working order and test it regularly. You don’t want to find out it
isn’t working when you go to use it. handcuffs have a tendency to rust from you being out in the rain.
Tourniquet-for yourself
Set of rubber gloves
Pepper spray
Baton
Small notepad (an all weather notepad is better, but since you only need an all-weather pad in the rain,
you can actually carry a regular notepad and store the all-weather notepad in the vehicle)
Pens
Handcuff key
Body camera
Sunglasses
In your vehicle:
Gallon size clear plastic zipper bags-great for evidence and keeping arrestee’s small items together
Large flashlight accessible from the driver’s seat, invest in one that is good quality and proven
Hat for cold and sunny weather
Flex cuffs
Small tool kit
Cones
Flares
Long guns
Less lethal shotgun
Crime scene tape
Fingerprint kit
