THE BEST GROWING MEDIUM FOR
YOUR RAISED BED
Raised beds need fluffy, nutrient-rich soil full of or-
ganic matter to enable good root growth that will
power the plant.
NO GOPHERS!
Prevention is better than
cure. Line the base of the
raised bed with hardware
cloth before you fill it. De-

ly made of metal. This is an
effective barrier against
gophers, voles and moles.
Ideally, use a pre-bagged medium specially formulat-
ed for raised beds. This medium is slightly heavier
than potting mix and more suited to raised beds. I like
Miracle-Gro® Performance Organics® Raised Bed Mix.
This is guaranteed to get the beginner gardener off to
a good, quick start.
Filling you raised bed is one of the big outlays; this is
why it is prudent to start small. However, if your AMEND THE
budget doesn’t stretch to using pre-bagged soil mix, GROWING
then you can mix your own custom-planting growing
medium using topsoil, compost, peat or vermiculite. MEDIUM
At the end of the growing
season, always amend the
soil mix in the raised bed.
Try Miracle-Gro Refresh 1

ish the soil.
