Science on Television
The medium of Television is being utilised by Vigyan Prasar for taking science to people since its inception. Every year, science serials, science films, documentaries, etc., are being produced and broadcast with an objective to bridge the gap between the laboratories and the citizens of the country. These programmes were telecast weekly through Doordarshan National Channel, Rajya Sabha TV, Lok Sabha TV and regional Kendras of Doordarshan.
Using the television as a medium for science communication/popularisation, the following was archived during the period under report.
Science Channel and India Science
To make scientific awareness and rational knowledge accessible to all, Vigyan Prasar launched two important initiatives on 15 January 2020: (i) DD-Science − A one-hour daily dedicated slot (5 pm to 6 pm) from Monday to Saturday on Doordarshan National Channel; and (ii) India Science (www.indiascience.in) − an Internet-based 24×7 science TV channel. These platforms are dedicated to science and technology knowledge dissemination, with a strong commitment to spread scientific awareness, especially with Indian perspectives, ethos, and cultural milieu.
DD-Science programmes comprise of documentaries, studio-based discussions, science news roundups and short films. For
the benefit of the viewers, all films telecast on DD-Science is also available on India Science– OTT channel on the internet for on-demand viewing. It can be accessed on any internet-enabled device – laptops, desktops, smart phones (India Science App is available on both Android
