different landforms”. Department of Science and Technology (DST) was a collaborator in this programme.
The panellists deliberated on the key challenges faced by India pertaining to land degradation and answered various questions posed by the audience. They were of the view the replication of good model/practices in related geographical areas along with long-term handholding of communities to carry out such interventions requires heavy investment which can only be done by the government.
The core agenda of the COP 14 was reversing land degradation and its outcomes while accelerating positive achievements for people and ecosystems to deliver on Sustainable Development Goals. The meeting was attended by 9,000 participants from 196 countries which included ministers, intergovernmental bodies, non-governmental bodies, private sector and industry experts.
Activity Corner in Magh Mela
The traditional melas and fairs organised based on historical events are the places of the congregation of large numbers of people. Such opportunities are being utilised by Vigyan Prasar to fulfil its constitutional mandate of science popularisation and development and nurturing of scientific temperament among the citizen of the country. Magh Mela at Sangam, Allahabad is one such opportunity. The Mela is organised on the bank of river Ganga every year during January-March. Tourists, small traders, and pilgrims visit the Mela from all across the country in millions.
On this occasion, Vigyan Prasar put up a Science Exhibition-cum Activity corners entitled “Aao Dekhe, Kare, Aur Samjhe,” meaning “let’s observe, experiment and understand”. The Exhibition was organised with the local support of S&T organisations. The exhibition remained open to the public between 14 January- 13 February 2020.
