125th Birthday of eminent naturalist and science writer Gopal Chandra Bhattacharya Celebrated
Bangiya Bijnan Parishad, Vigyan Prasar and Gopal Chandra Bhattacharya Bijnan Prasar Samiti jointly organised a one-day seminar to celebrate the 125th Birthday of Gopal Chandra Bhattacharya on 1 August 2019 at Bangiya Bijnan Parishad, Kolkata. One hundred sixty people participated in the seminar.
A Bengali book on Gopal Chandra Bhattacharya written by Dr. Ranotosh Chakrabarty was released at the seminar. Four technical sessions were conducted: (i) Life and works of Gopal Chandra Bhattacharya; (ii) Biodiversity – Observation and Conservation; (iii) Science Literature, Magazines and Gopal Chandra Bhattacharyya; and (iv) Science Communication in Bengali - Road Ahead.
Celebration of 125th Birth Anniversary of Dr Meghnad Saha
Meghnad Saha, a well-known Indian astrophysicist, who isbest known for his development of the Saha ionisation equation, used to describe chemical and physical conditions in stars. Saha was the first scientist to relate a star’s spectrum to its temperature, developing the thermal ionisation equations that have been foundational in the fields of astrophysics and astrochemistry. To commemorate his quasquicentennial birth anniversary, Vigyan Prasar proposed to organise a National Conference/Seminar for academicians, teachers, research scholars and students.
Under this initiative, Vigyan Prasar organised three National Conferences on ‘The Role of Meghnad Saha in the growth of Physics’. The workshops were organised at JCBUST, YMCA, Faridabad on 26 July 2019, KLS Gogte Institute of Technology, Belgaum, Karnataka on 22 August 2019 and Chhattisgarh Vigyan Sabha, Raipur on 16 November 2019. Nearly 600 students, teachers and practitioners have benefited from these conferences.

Celebration of National Mathematics Day
A one-day workshop was organised by Vigyan Prasar on 22 December 2019 to celebrate National Mathematics Day. The workshop was conducted at Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Centenary College, Rahara, West Bengal. One hundred twenty students and 30 teachers and science communicators participated in the programme. Professor Bimal Kumar Roy, Chairperson, National Statistical Mission, delivered the key-note address. He said teaching effective mathematics to primary and middle school students is challenging. Two technical sessions were also conducted. The first technical session was conducted by Professor Parthasarathi Mukhopadhyay from Ramakrishna Mission Residential College, Narendrapur. The second technical session was conducted by Professor Mrinal Nandi from West Bengal State University.
