Indian National Science Academy (INSA) is
a key contributor to the scientific firmament
of India in all its dimensions and works as
an autonomous institution under the aegis
of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. INSA acts as a body of science and scientists of eminence to promote, nurture
and safeguard their interests and those of
society in all matters of science.
The origin of Indian National Science
Academy dates back to the founding of
National Institute of Sciences in India
(NISI) on 7 January 1935 in Calcutta (now
Kolkata, when the Government of India
recognized NISI as the premier National
Scientific Society. NISI moved to its present premises in Delhi in 1951. The Government of India’s decision
in 1968 mandated NISI to represent India in all international science fora. In 1970, NISI was renamed the Indian National Science Academy (INSA).
INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMMES
As mandated by the Government of India, INSA has developed extensive interfaces and exchange
programmes with international bodies, including the International Science Council (ISC), a merged entity of the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU) and the International Social Science Council (ISSC). INSA formally represents India at the International Science
Council. INSA enables participation of Indian scientists in international programmes/
congresses through its association with International Science Council, Inter-
Academy Partnership, The World
Academy of Sciences, Association of Academies and Societies of Sciences in Asia and through bilateral academy
exchanges programmes.
EXCELLENCE IN SCIENCE
Honorary Fellows: People who have contributed apprecialbly to the promotion of science are elected as honorary fellows. Several honorary fellows of INSA have been decorated.
Foreign Fellows: Eminent scientists from other countries and those who have played a substantive role in the development of Indian science are also elected to the INSA Fellowship.
