Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) was established in 1989 to commemorate the birth centenary year of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. The
centre was registered as a society on 27 June 1989 with Dr Raja Ramanna as its Chairman. The new centre started functioning in the year 1989 with Prof. CNR Rao as the Founding President. With a mandate to pursue and promote world-class scientific research
and training at the frontiers of science and engineering, JNCASR has on its roll dynamic faculty and bright graduate students. The state-of-the-art experimental, computational
and infrastructural facilities, together with the architecturally innovative buildings and abundant
greenery, provide the best ambience for intellectual pursuit. Getting further empowered in the field of research and education, the centre was recognized
as deemed-to-be-university by University Grants Commission in the year 2002.
Research at the centre is carried out in units (departments), which are divided based on primary research focus. The units of the centre are chemistry and physics of Materials Unit, Engineering Mechanics Unit, Evolutionary and Integrative Biology Unit, Molecular Biology and Genetics Unit, Theoretical Sciences Unit, New Chemistry Unit, Geodynamics Unit, Neurosciences Unit and Education Technology
Unit. In addition, the International Centre for Materials Science, established by funding from
