People with Multiple Disabilities, Intellectual Disabilities, Comatose persons.
Description and Functionality
The device developed help in communication between persons with intellectual disabilities, comatose persons and their caregivers. The prototype consists of a headband wrapped around the forehead of the user. The headband is equipped with EEG sensors which acquire the signals coming from the brain. These signals are then given to a microcontroller in which a digital filter removes the signal from the muscles. The features are transmitted to the android device by means of Bluetooth interface between microcontroller and android device. An app for communication is installed in the android device. Based on the signals coming from the hardware the screen moves to the next screen or an option on the top or bottom of the page is selected. Upon selection of the option a pre-recorded audio message is played according to the option selected. This completes the communication between the user and the care giver.
  State-of-the-art
Use of Brain Computer Interface for Communication. Independent Component Analysis and Discrete Wavelet Transforms are used for noise removal and beta rhythm extraction. Development of Android App for oral communication, use of proprietary black and white images for selection of options and pre-recorded audio signals for communication.
Stage of Development
The prototype has been extensively field tested in hospitals and old age homes and is ready for commercialization.
