Considering your Choices
Herbs
Vegetables
Fruit
Herbs are an excellent choice for any backyard garden because they are both
essential for cooking and many of them have medicinal properties. Most herbs
are easy to grow, and many are perennials which means they will provide you
with years of delicious harvests.
Basil, chives, dill, and fennel all enjoy areas with full sun. Mint, oregano, parsley,
and cilantro do well in partial sun.
If your garden doesn't have the
ideal conditions for the herbs
you want, try using containers
and keep them close to your
kitchen. You can keep the pots
small or use dollies or wheels to
make sure you can move them
to sunnier or shadier areas as
needed.
Vegetables are what most
people envision when they think
of a backyard garden. There are
so many to choose from and
gardeners in temperate zones
can grow most of them as long
as they make certain accommodations in the areas which receive colder or
warmer weather.
Garlic, leeks, onions, and shallots are a wonderful addition to
any gardener's plot. They can be used extensively in cooking,
are relatively easy to grow, and offer health benefits.
