Rule 8: The comparative adjectives & the superlative
adjectives
Spelling rules:
1- We form the comparative by adding (-er) to one -
syllable adjectives.
e.g. long → longer than
The pencil is longer than the pen.
2- We just add (-r) to form the comparative. To one-
syllable ending with (-e)
e.g. nice → nicer than -Salwa is nicer than Mona
large → larger than -The book is larger than the copybook.
3- If we have one syllable adjectives ending in a consonant
preceded by a vowel, double the final consonant.
e.g. hot → hotter than -June is hotter than December.
Big → bigger than -The pyramid is bigger than the school.
4- If we have two-syllable adjectives ending in a (-y)
cross the (-y) and add (-ier).
e.g. funny→ funnier than
The clown show is funnier than the lion show.
happy→ happier than -Ahmad is happier than Marawan.
