CONSUMER ASSURANCE Notifiable (Exotic) Diseases
FMD
FMD has been reported (late May 2021) in Northern KZN. The first case was diagnosed in Mtubatuba which is outside the FMD control zone. An immediate temporary standstill of all cloven-hoofed animals, including livestock and game, was imposed in the District Municipalities of King Cetshwayo and Umkhanyakude, as well as the Local Municipalities of Nongoma, Ulundi and Pongola in the Zululand District Municipality. This outbreak will delay the efforts to have SA’s FMD free zone re-instated.
There are a few piggeries close to area where movement restrictions have been imposed, should the restriction n area be increased this could have a negative effect on these piggeries.
Only trade restrictions that have been imposed so far are from Botswana. DALRRD has undertaken to notify SAPPO immediately if there are further restrictions announced.
ASF
At the time of writing this board report more outbreaks have been diagnosed. This brings the number of outbreaks in 2021(5,5 months) to 52 {110 outbreaks have been notified to OIE since May 201}.
The rapid increase in outbreaks has significantly increased the risk of ASF spill over onto commercial farms.
SAPPO is addressing this in several ways:
1. SAFOSO research on SA compartment system is at an advanced stage, statistics have been gathered, analysis and report writing has commenced.
2. Awareness at all levels is continuing as well as via social media platform (Zach)
A concern is that the message is not getting out to small holder (plot)
farmers. The last outbreak was on a 450 pig unit near Bapsfontein.
3. We are expecting a full report on ASF outbreaks which we hope will
address the possible routes of entry.
4. After our NPHMC meeting in early June, we requested that the PVS
highlight Biosecurity on the farms they visit, possible routes of entry and most of all that a compartment certificate means nothing if there is not discipline (military style) on the farms. {NB includes managers and owners}.
Additionally, disaster contingency plans need to be developed and recorded in case of a disease outbreak which amongst other protocols addresses disposal of mortalities and culls.
