There is currently one bursary holder, Chantal Pennicott. She reported that the experimental work has been completed and that she expects to complete her writing up before the end of the year.
The classification project yielded suggested amendments to the regulations of the AGRICULTURAL PRODUCT STANDARDS ACT, 1990 (ACT No. 119 OF 1990). These have circulated for comments by stake holders. A final meeting with SAMIC is scheduled for 28 June before publication.
Dr Mokoele of the Veterinary faculty at Onderstepoort received partial funding for a PhD project on “The prevalence, perceptions and mitigation of antimicrobial resistance in pig farms of Gauteng province and surroundings in South Africa”. SAPPO was asked to fund the part on molecular markers. A report will hopefully only be available for the next meeting on 1 July. He was invited to attend in person.
Another contract was signed with the ARC-OVI for a project titled "Multi-locus sequence typing of African swine fever viruses (ASFV) from outbreaks to establish an ASFV Virus bank” All 397 ASFV in the virus repository have been genotyped using the p72 gene. To date, 179 CVR has been completed and 218 still need to be completed. The benefit of the project is evident in recent efforts to characterize the ASF viruses associated with outbreaks of the disease in Gauteng, Free State, Mpumalanga, North West Province, North Cape and Western Cape.
A research collaboration agreement with UP titled “Interventions for improved and safe pork production in informal settlements / smallholder pig production in South Africa” was recently signed. Over the past 3 months both a questionnaire and the project proposal have been compiled, which are required in order to proceed with the data collection scheduled for later on in this year
A new contract has just been signed with Stellenbosch University (Prof Phillip Strydom) for the project “Characterisation of small holder pork value chain in the Cape Metropole District of the Western Cape Province, South Africa”. Two reports have been received. A total of 157 questionnaires were done in the Cape Metropole District on the first week of May 2021 (03/05/2021 - 07/05/2021). a total of 172 questionnaires were administered to pork vendors from 5 different locations namely Khayelitsha (44), Emfuleni (35), Delft (30), Dunoon (32) and Strand (31) to determine their hygiene and food safety practices. For objective 2, a total of 210 questionnaires were administered to pork consumers Khayelitsha (33), Emfuleni (40), Delft (48), Dunoon (50) and Strand (39) to determine their demographic profile and perceptions on vendor hygiene, quality and safety of pork from the informal market.
