Definition of Foundation Definition of Shallow Foundation

 • The foundation of a structure is defined as the part of the structure in direct contact of
with the ground and which transmits the load to the ground (Tomlinson,2001) • Shallow foundation is a foundation constructed in depth of not exceeding 3.0m
from formation level. The depth to width ratio of the foundation is D/B ≤ 3

 • Generally, there are two (2) types of foundation:

  Shallow Foundation
  Deep Foundation

                                                                                  D

                                                                 B

                     • There are two (2) factors to be considered in shallow foundation design :
                              Soil bearing capacity
                              Differential settlement ≤ 25mm (Das, 2004)
