162 Enzymes In Tropical Soils
Chapter XI:
UTILIZATION OF SOIL ENZYMES
11.1 The Supplies of Nutrient Elements
11.2 Preparation of Organic Compost
11.3 Biological Fertilizers
S
oil enzymes is of utmost importance in availing plant nutrient elements of
organic matter origin in the soil – plant system. The presence of soil
enzymes may ease and speed up the transformation of organically bound
nutrient elements to inorganic nutrient elements. Since the organic nutrient
elements are not available for plant-root absorption while the inorganic nutrient
elements are readily available, the work of soil enzymes is very important. The
effective use of soil enzymes may enable the use of nutrient elements in organic
matters accumulated in the soil environment, particularly in agriculture
ecosystems. This may also lower the use of commercial fertilizers because part of
the nutrients supplied by these fertilizers may be substituted by the nutrients from
organic sources abundant in the environment.
