Another consideration is that in the Humana plan, your costs will jump sharply if you go to out-
of-network providers (unless it’s an emergency, you will probably pay 50% of the cost). This
plan has a large network, which makes it less likely that you would need to go out-of-network.
But it’s important to verify that Dr. Miranda is in network. If she isn’t, it’s possible that any tests
or treatments or referrals that she orders will also be considered out-of-network.
With Medigap policies, on the other hand, there are no networks and you are covered when
you go to any doctor who accepts Medicare.
Finally, if you switch to the Humana plan and later want to switch back to a Medigap policy, you
would likely be medically underwritten, although it’s not clear to me whether all insurance
companies in Washington do this or only some of them. In Appendix B1, the footnotes indicate
that some companies may not underwrite people who are switching to Medigap policies from
other types of coverage. That’s a question for one of the SHIBA counselors.
