benefits. In Appendices B2 and B3 if you look at each insurer’s rating class, and if it includes the
words “Innovative” or “Extra,” the plan may include some dental or vision benefits.
You will need to contact the plan to determine what this coverage is (since it’s not
standardized) and whether it’s a good fit for your needs. And before getting a plan that includes
the extra benefits, make sure that your dentist/optometrist will accept that coverage and that
the premiums are not much higher than the standard plans.
Rx Drug Plan Coverage
Stand-alone drug plans often change their premiums quite a bit from one year to the next. In
mid-October I’ll check to see next year’s lowest-premium stand-alone plans in Alameda County
and will let you know what I find. If the SilverScript SmartRx Plan raises its premiums quite a bit
and you can save money by switching to a different stand-alone plan for 2022, all it will take is
one phone call.
Hans, please let me know if you have any questions. There are a couple of things to keep in
mind as you make the transition to Medicare as your primary coverage. On your initial visits to
physicians after October 1, show the office staff your enrollment cards for Medicare A&B and
the Medigap plan you’ve chosen. And on your first visit to the pharmacy, show the pharmacist
the enrollment card for the stand-alone drug plan you’re enrolled in.
Also, you’re entitled to a free “Welcome to Medicare” physical (see page 11 of the evaluation),
but you’ll probably have to request it.
Sincerely,
David Armes, CFP®
