You and your wife Beth are knowledgeable about health insurance (I believe she said that she
works in health coverage), and so I’m sure you have looked at areas where you might be able to
save money if you stay in the employer plan. Most plans are required to have an appeals
process for formulary exceptions, and if your physician is willing to say that your non-formulary
drug is medically necessary, there’s a slight chance you could have it covered.
When people leave their employer plans, they should make sure they are not unintentionally
losing other benefits such as retiree coverage in a few years. Again, though, I’m sure you’ve
looked at that.
