2. Getting reviews and recommendations
One of the most important things that you can do when it comes to marketing your ebook is encourage your readers to review it. The more reviews your ebook has, the more chance it has of getting noticed by other readers and being picked up and featured on the storefronts of different retailers – all of which generates more interest and leads to increased sales. The more positive reviews that your ebook has, the more chance it has of being featured in retailer promotions and in promotions with sites such as BookBub.com (more information in Section 5).
You can start by asking friends and family to post a review of your ebook online – either through the retailer they purchased it from, or on any ebook retailer site that they have an account with. Reviews placed on retailers’ sites have to be genuine, so you can’t review your own ebook or get people to post made-up reviews; but if you know that family and friends have genuinely enjoyed your ebook, then ask them to leave a review where they can.
Amazon and Google Play allow ‘family’ ebook reading, so ebooks can be shared between up to six devices that are registered under the same credit card. This can work to your advantage if you’re looking to get an ebook reviewed by friends and family – you can ask them all to leave one!
Ebook buyers are very suspicious of an ebook that only has 5-star reviews... so encourage people to submit a balanced and truthful review of your ebook, rather than a blanket ‘5 stars, the best book ever written’-style review. Some ebook websites require you to have an account with them before you can leave a review; others let anyone leave a review, regardless of whether you have an account or not.
