MONTANA’S STATE CAPITAL
In 1805, Lewis and Clark explored the area now known as the state of Montana. Two centuries and much history later, we invite you to do the same.
1864
Congress creates the Montana Territory; four gold miners strike it rich in “Last Chance Gulch.”
1869
Helena suffers major fires and builds the initial fire tower, the “Guardian of the Gulch.”
1889
Montana becomes the 41st state.
1899
Construction begins on the Montana State Capitol Building, completed in 1902.
1908 – 1924
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Helena constructs the Cathedral of Saint Helena.
  1875
Helena becomes the capital of the Montana Territory.
1893
Helena becomes the permanent capital of Montana.
