Pastoral Care
One Patient, One Employee, One Community at a Time
Chaplains and other spiritual caregivers across the System play a key role in supporting patients, families and staff members. One of their key roles is to visit patients and families experiencing spiritual distress, which is, “a disruption in the life principle that pervades a person’s entire being and that integrates and transcends one’s biological and psychological nature,” according to the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association. FY2018 saw an 11 percent increase in the number of spiritual distress visits.
In It Together
During FY2018, chaplains hosted thousands of staff events, including Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) sessions to help staff cope with stressful
 events or
transitions, services
of blessings to fulfill
prayer and blessing
requests, and
innovative activities
to help improve
staff wellbeing.
Examples of these
endeavors include
Refreshment
for the Soul, Tea
Time and G.I.F.T.
(Chaplains Giving
Inspiration for
Today). While the names are different, the purpose is the same: to provide meaningful encounters for staff. Total combined staff attendance at these events was 135,977.
