Bettering Lives On and Off Campus
In the Community: In addition to providing spiritual care to more than 4,250 patients, Chaplain Dave Smith at Baylor Scott & White Continuing Care Hospital – Temple is involved in two local community programs. One is a local predominately African-American pastors group, and the second – C.A.R.E. Leadership Network – connects churches and social service leaders from Temple and Belton with community projects in diverse areas.
“Often, the conversation is not about a solution. It’s about support. And the support offered by the chaplain provides what is needed to make it through another hour, another shift, another day.”
— Chaplain Mark Labaj, Baylor Scott & White Medical Center — Round Rock
Enhancing Spiritual Care: The Pastoral Care Department at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Hillcrest collaborated with the Palliative Care team to shift their efforts in addressing the spiritual health of patients receiving palliative care. Chaplain Glen Dixson was brought in as the dedicated chaplain for Palliative Care, and new templates were created to increase staff education in spiritual care.
Holistic Medicine: Chaplain David Murphy at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – College Station promotes pastoral care as an important aspect of holistic medicine. Chaplain Murphy emphasizes the importance of hope for recovery with patients. In addition, he plays a significant role in hosting a Clinical Pastoral Education program, which has helped expand pastoral care offerings at the hospital by facilitating the addition of two PRN chaplains who completed the program.
Lasting Dignity: While serving at the West Dallas
CareFest, Chaplain Sherry Shanks from Baylor University Medical Center (BUMC) met a volunteer who, years earlier, lost her baby
at 16 weeks and received care at BUMC. The woman expressed how much the ministry of maternal child health Chaplain Millicent Albert meant to her and how highly she thought of BUMC because of the dignity and respect given to her baby.
