A CENTURY OF PARLIAMENTARY LIFE
           IN INDONESIA

Yamin and Soekarno were among the speakers who proposed the five
national principles, which became known as the Pancasila. Then, the
second session on July 10–16, 1945 discussed various issues, including
the form of the state and the government structure. All went without
Japanese intervention. However, the country being discussed would still
operate within the boundaries of the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity
                                      Sphere.

Before the BPUPKI was formed, on May 16–18,
1945, an all-Java youth congress was held in Ban-
dung under the sponsorship of the Indonesian

In carrying out its Youth Force which was established by the Japa-
nese in mid-1944. There were two versions to the
duties, BPUPKI held congress: the official one featuring speeches by
two official sessions Japanese officials and unofficial ones which fea-
tured debates among the delegates. The unof-
and one informal ficial version solidified solidarity among partici-

         session, all of which pants.

were held in Jakarta The congress passed two resolutions. First, all

prior to the Japanese associations in Indonesia must be united under
                                                            one leadership. Second, Indonesia’s indepen-
defeat against the dence must be realized as soon as possible. The

Allied Forces on August second resolution was driven by the youth’s im-
                                                            patience over Japan’s empty promises.
         14, 1945.
On June 18, 1945, Chuo Sangi-In held its eights
and last session under the Japanese occupation.
At that time, the war was closing in to the island
of Java, while Morotai and Tarakan had already
fallen to the hands of the Allied Forces. Bomb at-
tacks, especially on Kalimantan and Sulawesi, had intensified. Members
of the Chuo Sangi-In realized that Japan was in an increasingly desperate
position. This presented a good opportunity for Indonesians to decide on
                                      their own fate.
