Combating Corruption:
New Approaches and Proven Strategies
First of all, on behalf of Global Organization Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC),
allow me to extend my gratitude to this forum. I am very pleased and honoured to be here
today.
Thank you for inviting me and giving me the opportunity to talk about the “new approaches
and proven strategies in combating corruption”.
Allow me to start the discussion by highlighting the essential roles of parliamentarians
in combating corruption. Corruption is not only a threat to democracy but also is a threat
that undermines economic development, violates social justice, and destroys trust in state
institutions.
It goes without saying that corruption can negatively affect a country’s development and
society at large. What is more alarming is the fact that citizens are the ones who bear the heavy
economic and social burdens of this endemic corruption.
As elected representatives of the people, Parliamentarians hold the responsibility to express
people’s will and make sure the policies implemented bring prosperity to the people.
Parliamentarians have both the moral and constitutional authority as well as the legitimacy
that gives weight to their roles and involvement in the fight against corruption.
