dwelling a short distance away in the churchyard or
cemetery of the Church of Our Lady. Although the old
name had clung on for centuries, this so-called "Ceme-
tery of Our Lady," like the land surrounding the Ca-
thedral where La Bellevue was located, had long ago
ceased to be a place of burial.* The original Church
of Our Lady had been built in the ninth century; the
present structure dates back to 1120.
The new school-new site and neu/ name, the School
of Our Lady-was an immediate success, an almost
