Chapter 20
TO SAVE AND PERPETUATE
A s sooN es Bnotnnn RyrnN, as Bishop Malou always
I addressed him, had submitted his report on the
present status of the Xaverian Brothers, he went to
work on another assignment from His Excellency: "A
Plan to Save and Perpetuate the Xaverian Brothers."
He must have worked feverishly because before that
month, November, was out, he had forwarded to Bishop
Malou a lengthy document. In his "report" he had dealt
with tangibles: personnel, debts, foundations, activities.
In his "Plan to Save and Perpetuate the Xaverian
Brothers," he had to project himself into the future so
that he could point out what could be done under ordi-
nary circumstances, provided he had reasonable assist-
ance.
At projecting himself into the future, Brother Ryken
was gifted. Given pen and paper and a minimum of
time, he could be another Jules Verne romancing about
traveling to the moon, circling the earth in eighty days,
or navigating under the seven seas for twenty thousand
leagues. If the survival of this Brotherhood seemed
problematical to Bishop Malou, it did not to its Founder.
His Excellency saw only the facts. He was realistic. But
Brother Ryken looked beyond the facts and saw in them
the seeds of future possibilities. He was imaginative.
In conjuring up this rosy vision he pointed out to the
hesitant Bishop that first of all the Xaverian Brothers
had to expand their activities and this meant establish-
ing a small Infant-School which would attract a clientele
among the middle-class, a boarding school which would
