TO SAVE AND PERPETUATE I27
came to visit them, bringing with him Brother John
Seghers, who was to act as janitor at St. Augustine's
Church, and Brother Paul Van Gerwen, who was to be
the community-cook until he acquired a certain pro-
ficiency in English. When Father Turner objected to
paying for a fifth man, Brother Paul was sent home to
        Bruges.
The Founder had been able to spare two men for
England because on the previous April second, the Tues-
day in Easter week, he had given the habit to the six
young men who had been marking time at "Het Wal-
letje." These were the first postulants to be clothed in
the habit since the death of Bishop Boussen.
To relent that much Bishop Malou must have brought
himself to believe that there was something feasible in
Brother Ryken's "Plan to Save and Perpetuate tlr.e
        Xaverian Brothers."
