monials from the Dutch Government extolling the suc-
cess of Father Van Beek in his work with the deaf and
dumb.
Almost immediately a new idea was churning in the
Ryken fertile brain.
Presently, when the Christmas season was a huppy
memory, the two men got their heads together tnd
decided that they would establish in Bruges, rhis rime,
a b,oarding-school catering to rhe deaf and dumb boys
in England. The low cost of living on the Continent as
compared with that of England would give this institu-
tion a distinct advantage. Father Van Beek wrote the
prospectus; Brother Ryken had it ranslated into English.
The Van Beek-Ryken Institution would accepr boys,
ages eight to fourteen, provided that they had been
vaccinated and were capable of instruction. The six-
year course would provide instruction in religion, sacred
and profane history, English, writing geography, and
drawing. The annual fee, payable in advance quarterly,
was sixteen pounds and was all-inclusive witli the ex-
ception of postage and medical fees. The school uniform
was a "must" for Sundays, holidays, and for going out
for walks: coat and trousers of blue cloth with a 6lack
waistcoat. .up also was "de rigueur." As a special

feature an Xaverian Brother would be in London it the
end of May each year, and at the end of October if
necessary, to receive the boys and to conduct them to
Bruges.
Added item of information: the fare from London to
Bruges, according to the prospectus, was seventeen shil-
lings and sixpence.
