INVITATION TO AMERICA 139

Superior General of the Brothers of St. Aloysius was
the pastor of Oudenbosch, and the other pastors were
         claiming equal rights.
Brother Ryken, who was very versed in all the pro's
and con's of the controversy and who had been urging
his friend, Father llellemons, to have the Rule of the
Brothers of St. Aloysius approved by Rome so that such
misunderstandings could be avoided, let Bishop Spald-
ing know thar he stood with the Brothers. He pointed
out that if the Xaverian Brothers went to America, they
would go only with the understanding that he was their
Superior, that they would be subject to the Xaverian
Rule and Constitution, and that they were not to accept
that status of a diocesan foundation.
Apparently neither Father Van Beek nor Father De-
parcq, if they were present, took part in the discussion.
Bishop Spalding and Brother Ryken settled norhing.
The Bishop did prepare a memorandum of points dis-
cussed and he informed his visitor of an address in Paris
where he could be reached by mail.
When the Father Superior got back to Bruges, he
found the community still agog over the possibility of
going on the American "mission," but when the breth-
ren heard the memorandum of the points discussed,
they were indignant. Why should an American bishop
conclude that what happened in Breda would happen
in Louisvillet It had not come to pass in Bruges.
The Founder decided that another interview might
help to clear the air, so he wrote the Bishop in care
of Mons. Ilector Bussange, Quai de Voltaire No. 25,
Paris, France: ". . . After the Brothers had been told
of your memorandum, they fancied that you have not
complete confidence in them. . . . I feel that in another
conference on your return everything will be satisfac-
         torily arranged."
