in those days, only eleven days at sea, he landed in
Liverpool and went at once to the Brothers' house in
nzlanchester. Here he spent the night and before retir-
ing he had given the Brothers a full report on Louis-
ville, the two schools, the Brothers' quarters, and Bishop
Spalding.
On November fifteenth, four months ro the day since
he and the pioneering Brothers had sailed out of Le
[Iavre, he was back in Bruges. At recreation time he
retold the stories he had used in Manchester and since
he was in no hurry this time, he elaborated.
Brother Ryken loved to entertain with one of his
travelogues and on such occasions he lvas prepared to
go on talking as long as anyone, not averse to staying up
late and getting up early, asked another question.
When the novelty of being back had worn off, he sat
down with Brother Nicholas, the Superior in his ab-
sence, who had nothing to report: the community was
well to a man; Father Van Beek was still faithfully teach-
ing his method to the two young Brothers; no new can-
didates had arrived; Bishop Malou had gone to Rome
for the promulgation of the dogma of the Immaculate
Conception on December eighth and he would not be
back before the middle of January.
Since everything was running so smoothly both at
"Het Walletje" and at the School of Our Lady, the
