small community under the name of the Brothers of the
Child Jesus."
The next activity of Mr. Ryken's about which some-
thing is known is having served as a volunteer hospital
worker at the Civilian Hospital at Groningen, North
Holland. A testimonial letter tells the story.

The undersigned, joint administrator of the Mili-
tary Hospital at Namur and assigned to take charge
of the Civilian Hospital at Groningen during the
epidemic that took place in that torvn, certifies that
Theodore Ryken has ofiered himself voluntarily
for the care of the sick in the above named estab-
lishment without claiming any salary or indemnity.
He has remained on duty {rom December, 1826,
and was still doing his work when the undersigned
was recalled by the Government to resume his work
at Namur.
The above named has always given proof of great
zeal and activity for aiding the sick rvherever the
service called him, and I willingly give him my sin-
cere thanks for his work.
I presented him this certificate in order that it
may eventually be useful to him.
