Championing Sustainability-Centric Education

Fostering an educational ecosystem that is rooted in sustainability requires a comprehensive
reframing of existing modalities, from curriculum design to teacher training and use of

technology.

To begin with, sustainability should be incorporated into diverse subjects within the curriculum,
supported by project-based learning and interdisciplinary approaches. Initiatives in the United
Arab Emirates, where my organization is based, provide examples of how sustainability can be

integrated into curricula across all school levels.

Leaders also need to recognize that educators play a critical role in achieving desired learning
outcomes. They need professional development focused on integrating sustainability into their

teaching practices. In the UAE, for example, this is being implemented through programs under
the Greening Capacities Initiative, developed by the Ministry of Education and UNICEF, which
trains teachers in sustainability education.

Technology serves as a crucial enabler of sustainability education, as it offers platforms for
collaboration, access to information and simulation of real-life scenarios. However, technology

should complement and not replace human guidance when it comes to fostering green skills.
