12/4/25, 9:08 AM How Green Skills Are Reshaping Global Education
Several key bottlenecks hinder the implementation of green education in schools. The primary
concern is ensuring that students from diverse backgrounds have equitable access to
sustainability education. Global climate challenges exacerbate existing inequalities and
vulnerabilities among marginalized communities, who often face greater barriers to sustainability
education. This further highlights the role of green education in empowering displaced migrants
and similar marginalized groups.
Holistic assessment frameworks are needed, as traditional testing methods may not be able to
adequately measure sustainability skills. These should go beyond numerical data to assess social
and economic dimensions as well as diverse stakeholder perspectives. The tests should also
prioritize practical skills and competencies, so that teachers can provide personalized feedback to
students.
Additionally, by incorporating region-based cultural knowledge into the sustainability curriculum,
students can better apply their knowledge to solve environmental challenges, including those
rooted in societal norms that impede environmental conservation. These include rising
consumerism; increasing food miles, which raises the overall carbon footprint; the normalization
of convenience over sustainability; and habitual littering.
Finally, coordinated action plays a big role in overcoming challenges in implementing
sustainability education. For instance, in the UAE, collaborations between the Ministry of
Education and GEMS Education demonstrate how national leadership can nurture green skills
through robust educational frameworks, teacher training and school programs. Similarly, the UAE
Ministry of Education, in cooperation with the Climate Education Office and my organization,
launched a platform to support access to green education for teachers.
The Path Forward: Building A Greener Tomorrow Through Education
Green education has evolved from being a mere add-on to becoming a key pillar of the modern
academic framework. It marks a dynamic shift toward future-centric education that equips
learners with the necessary resources to address complex environmental challenges. Furthermore,
international blueprints like UNESCO’s roadmap emphasize education's pivotal role in shaping a
sustainable future.
