The second and third movements are, in their way, just as memorable. The former
features a simple yet memorable melody that has all the songfulness and
expressivity of an operatic aria. The finale, meanwhile, has some of the same
quicksilver energy of Mendelssohn's much-loved overture to A Midsummer Night's
Dream.
Recommended recording: Alina Ibragimova (violin), Orchestra of the Age of
Enlightenment / Vladimir Jurowski (Hyperion). Read our review here.
