The drivetrain is a simple Chevy 305 with an RV cam backed by
a Turbo 350, but with no weight and a 3.73 posi out back, it can be a
pretty exciting ride. With QA1 coilovers all around and a home-brewed
triangulated four-link out back, it handles pretty well. New gauges have
been installed in all of the old gauge binnacles, and they guys have used all
of the old switchgear to operate things like the factory intended.
One of the big draws to the car are the dice-themed air cleaners. They
took that feature a step further by mounting them at angles to give the
effect that they are in the middle of a roll. The dice/gaming theme carries
through the vehicle with such items as the valve stem caps and hood
prop. The hood prop was created out of necessity as the stock one was
too long for their tastes. While in Las Vegas, they decided to make a new
one out of dice and poker chips super-glued together. That slapdash piece
of engineering is probably the most photographed part of the vehicle,
                according to Greg.
The car has been to over a dozen car shows, and Greg reports that at
each show, he’s inundated with stories that showgoers tell him about their
particular connection with a Metro in some way, shape, or form. It’s also a
very kid-friendly vehicle at shows. Admittedly, Greg and Dave’s car is a bit
cleaner than most of the vehicles on these pages, but that doesn’t stop
them from letting kids get in, climb around, and get their pictures taken
                inside.
And what about that name, ‘The Nashole?’ We had to ask. “We were
about two weeks from being fi nished and the car kept fi ghting us, says
Greg. “The transmission we had just bought began to leak. After weeks
of wrenching from 3PM to midnight after a full day of work, the creative
juices were fl owing I guess and I just said, ‘You little nashole!’” The name
stuck and he had it pinstriped on the car while in Las Vegas.
On a side note, co-builder Dave Ford is no stranger to these pages,
having built a military-inspired Model A that was featured way back in
issue #5, before you could actually order a subscription!
