After conquering the monster fl ight, we fi nally had
the chance to walk on American soil. Oh man it felt
good! You know… like you were meant to be born in
the USA. This was followed by another 16 hour and 34
min trip (to cover 1164 miles) to Stillwater Minnesota.
Here Ratrod SA was warmly welcomed by rat rod
family. It was as if the global family of rustbucket lovers
had known us forever! Arms wide open and warm
heartfelt smiles, we were taken to our fi rst car shows.
What an experience!
American rust is truly in a class of its own. This was
evident after our fi rst ride with some of our blue-collar
rat rod ambassadors. The power and fi ne fi nishing
of each rat rod was astounding as it displayed sheer
cheekiness with loads of badass attitude. The Blown
Hulk Camino (Chris Walker’s beast from ITW Hot Rods)
was wild and fast on the open road. With it’s 800 HP I
think my dad (Frikkie) bit off more than he could chew
with this one … and well uhm, let’s just say he has the
scars to prove it. Whilst I drove with Kathy Duchene
in her 1938 Chrysler Royal, the 350 big block was very
delicate and smooth. I never knew riding a rat rod
could be done with such style and fi nesse – this ride
defi nitely got sweet melodies from my lips! It is actually
a burnout by Ken Lindberg that blew our minds. Boy
can that man burn! More than anything else it was the
hospitality and generosity of this community that really
touched our hearts. Everyone went out of their way to
make us feel welcome – defi nitively helped us to make
some lasting memories. (Special thank you to our hosts
Roger Quast and Erin Staeck)
