rat rod for a donation of only fi ve
dollars. You could tell that they
were not disappointed by the
smiles on their faces as they rode
by. After the excursions, it was
time to get serious! A fl ag girl in a
saucy sailor outfi t was summoned,
and the racing began! With a
loud roar of their engines, the
rods took off two by two, trying to
beat their competition. When they
got to the end of the track they
swirled round and round in clouds
of dust until they were barely
visible. After the excitement of
the races, the pinup queen Cherry
Belle gathered a group of pretty
girls for a pinup contest. There
was a junior division and adult
division and the competition was
tough! After much deliberation,
the winners were chosen and giv-
en a goodie bag with jewelry and
a sash made by the very talented
Cherry Belle herself.
It was time for more rat rod-
ding fun after the pinup contest,
so Mr. Bart Brumfi eld and Mr. Crab
Landry lead the rat rodder’s to a
concrete area. They invited them
to perform the best freestyle burn-
outs they could, and boy did they
deliver! Tires were popping, smoke
was billowing and rubber was
fl ying everywhere. I hope those
guys brought plenty of spares, es-
pecially Frenchie and Susan, who
drove in all the way from Maine
to attend the event! Now that’s
dedication! You know a show has
a great reputation when people
come all the way from Texas like
Dennis Hom (The Homster) and his
family, and from Mississippi Steve
Mcduffi e (Slingshot) and his fam-
ily. Not to mention some of the
volunteers that traveled all the way
from Kentucky and Virginia to help
with the show. The day began to
wind down as the vendors started
packing up. Awards were given to
the show and shine cars,
