 A19-A1058 coast road
Our A19-A1058 coast road scheme being delivered for Highways England in Newcastle upon Type reached a signi cant milestone in June when the bridge beams to the rst of the six new bridges being built on the scheme were installed.
The 19 beams ranging in weight from 25 tonnes to 57 tonnes were installed successfully over a 24-hour period using a 400-tonne crane initially, working in tandem with a 250 tonne crane for the heavier precast edge beams. The project team developed a solution where the bridge edge beams were pre- cast off site, incorporating the parapet edge detail supporting
Highways England’s drive to increase off site manufacture and signi cantly reduce the need for work at height. The lifts were carefully planned to allow them to take place within the inner ring of the operational roundabout. They all progressed to plan and the works were completed ahead of programme.

bridge and opening it to traf c later in the year, as well as installing
bridge beams to two further bridges before the end of the summer.
The project, being delivered in joint venture with Lagan Construction as part of the Highways England Collaborative Delivery Framework, is required to comply with Highways England’s ‘Raising the Bar’ health and safety standards. These standards,
as the name suggest, are intended to make a step change
in the approach to health and safety in construction and are demanding. Compliance requirements are some way above what is required within both the existing Sisk and Lagan management systems.
T
et
h to our usual use of the ‘best from both’ from the joint venture
partners systems would not deliver what we needed to meet and thereafter exceed what Highways England expected from us. As such, the fully integrated joint venture team lead by Chris Todd as the joint venture’s Health and Safety Manager - with support from Andy Oakley - have been developing a bespoke management system that is fully compliant with both BS OHAS 18001:2007 and the ‘Raising the Bar’ standards. In June, this system successfully achieved accreditation from the British Standards Institute. This
is a huge achievement and demonstrates what our teams can achieve together, along with our absolute commitment to driving the safety agenda and supporting our key customers in achieving their aims and aspirations.

The A19-A1058 Coast Road scheme is being delivered by our Civils business unit with Lagan Construction Group. As well as the bridges being built, the scope includes the installation of over 900m of contiguous piled wall with pile diameters up 1,500mm and 30m in depth, along with the excavation of
over 100,000m3 of material to create a three-tier interchange at one of the busiest roundabout junctions in the North East of England. The scheme is part of the
UK government’s Roads Investment Strategy in England and is scheduled to be ‘open to traf c’ by March 2019.
