WELCOME
from Stephen Bowcott
Last year was a very positive one for Sisk. We achieved almost €1.1bn turnover last year, of which just over €700m was in Ireland.
The UK divisions have been stabilising some signi cant legacy challenges and my goal this year is to keep revenue steady and concentrate on quality over quantity.
With large-scale high pro le projects taking place across all sectors, 2017 is set to be a successful year for the business
Although 60% of our current work is with nine clients, we are rapidly expanding our operations in Switzerland, Belgium and Europe off the back of our Pharma-related business - now renamed as Life Sciences. The article on the centre pages will give you a deeper understanding of our Life Sciences work in Europe and a perspective from our colleagues working there.
One of our other expansion plans has been the establishment in Ireland of a social housing building company under the banner of ‘Sisk Living’. We intend to leverage our extensive experience with cellular accommodation and build an affordable housing business to around 1,000 units a year. Both of these business operations will offer career development opportunities over the coming months and years.
Your involvement and the ideas which arose from our staff strategic workshops are helping us improve ef ciencies in our operations and Owen Sisk and his Performance team have various articles in this edition to keep you up-to-date on these initiatives. I am really pleased to see that some of the ideas are coming to fruition with occupational health improvements being actively progressed. The recently launched Health & Wellness Calendar sets out a range of awareness activities each month and details events taking place across Ireland the UK.
The cornerstone of ef ciency on any construction site is in achieving top line health and safety performance. I believe the industry needs to make a step change in terms of how people are working safely on construction sites. Many of you will remember the launch of our Zeros philosophy in 2010 and the subsequent step change in our practices and behaviours. Seven years later - and in order to have a clearer view on our current standing in terms of our culture and safety behaviours - we recently instructed an external ‘snapshot’ audit of ourselves. The initial ndings of this ‘Culture of Care’ audit make really interesting reading and are discussed in the main safety feature in this magazine. I am sure that this will give us a re-energised drive to create an even safer environment in every part of our business.
The recent Sisk Staff Family BBQ in Dublin, shown in the photos opposite and on the front cover, was a great success and there are ongoing plans for similar social events hosted by other business divisions in the near future. I hope those of you who were able to attend had a really enjoyable day with your families.
