  Our journey to zero
Time for a step change
We have recently been asking ourselves how effective our HS&W practices really are: • Is BBS, the behavioural safety initiative, effective and how can we tell?
• Are the behaviours being consistently implemented and practiced?
• How are we performing against our peers and other high performing industries?
With further progress in mind, we commissioned an Independent Culture of Care Diagnostic by Optimus. In April this year, Optimus visited our sites and of ces to measure our safety practices and behaviours at a snapshot in time. This included observations, interviews with team members and a wider staff survey.
The company’s approach to benchmarking was not to ask what Sisk need to do to be “safe enough” by complying with law or legislation. Instead it assessed our Health, Safety and Environmental strategy against what it is possible to do to create safe, reliable, predictable and resilient workplaces.
A fresh perspective
The ndings revealed that Sisk are not as established in our safety culture as we had initially thought!
Our independent assessment is shown on the step diagram below. This shows that some of our projects are on the Proactive rung of the Culture of Care Maturity Ladder, with some on the Calculative rung but, overall, we were seen as being at the top end of the Reactive rung. The Maturity Ladder benchmark covers all industries and therefore sets a very high benchmark that we should aspire to. It should be seen as a positive method to help us step up our performance to class leading standards. This will require strong leadership at all levels of our business and our supply chain so that we move all our workplaces onto the Proactive rung of the ladder.
Sisk’s assessed position on the Optimus Culture of Care ladder
Generally Here
Safety is impotant. We do a lot everytime we have an accident.
Sometimes here
Safety is managed on the basis of procedures and uses agging indicators
Here is rare
Safety is managed with workforce invovement
Safety is how the company does its business, possesising inherent safety mindfulness
                      Safety, Do not get Caught
Going forward, we will use this method of assessment and measurement for our safety culture and behaviours. This forward-looking indicator of the culture of care in the company will run in parallel with all our other safety indicators and is not meant to replace them.
This positive, leading indicator will help us to refocus our efforts on eliminating poor behaviours and promoting a proactive culture.
What can I expect to see happen?
We are currently cascading the content of the Optimus approach and their ndings across the business operations and making short and medium-term action plans to take us to the Proactive rung on the maturity ladder. We will provide regular updates of these plans over the next year and beyond.
